Ilhan Omar reacts to Kevin McCarthy’s plan

Kevin McCarthy’s plan to remove Ilhan Omar from committees elicits a response from Ilhan Omar.

On Sunday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) denounced as disingenuous House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-CA) intentions to remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

During an interview on MSNBC’s Yasmin Vossoughian Reports, Omar was questioned about McCarthy‘s repeated assurances that her committee assignments will be removed. The progressive legislator was particularly asked if there had been any changes to the situation in the days following McCarthy’s acquisition of the speaker’s gavel.
I haven’t heard anything new, “said Omar. “My understanding is that the rules package must be completed immediately.

Kevin McCarthy‘s plan to remove Ilhan Omar from committees is met with her response.
Hopefully, when we reassemble on Monday, that will be at the top of the agenda. After that, the various caucuses—our caucus and their conference—will nominate members to committees, and we’ll go forward from there.

McCarthy was singled out, and Omar made a comment about how tough it had been for her to become a speaker before citing McCarthy’s Somali heritage as a justification to keep her on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
She continued, “I do have to say for a speaker who has faced a historic humiliation — that had gotten elected after 15 rounds, surpassing a record that was set prior to the Civil War – there is a potential here as he has indicated to not do things in the way it has been done before.

“I think it would be hypocritical for him to remove the first African born on the subcommittee on Africa on the Foreign Affairs Committee where I’ve had the opportunity to not only reflect my constituents, but the tone of so many people who have never had an opinion on the Foreign Affairs Committee,” the first African born said.

Omar, who was selected in 2018, has sparked a number of debates for her anti-Israel views and utterances. She has also been under fire for alleged antisemitism in relation to specific remarks. In the summer of 2021, when Omar came under fire from both sides of the political aisle for appearing to compare Israel and the United States to the Taliban, McCarthy vowed that if his party won back control of the House, he would remove the lawmaker from the Foreign Affairs Committee because she was “anti-American” and “antisemitic.”

He had previously reaffirmed that commitment late last year when House Republicans barely regained control of the chamber in the November midterm elections.
